Hijackthis reports Microsoft Maneger = Spoole32.exe

Is this supposed to be there?

Note the spelling of "Maneger". I just cleaned up my laptop and gotten rid of some other nasties, and I realized in the process that Spoole32 is always running in my task list, but never was before.

Thanks for taking a look.

No, it is not a valid Windows file.
Run Hijack This! and kill the HKCU or other registry Hive Run line that launches the application.

Then disable System Restore. (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Utilities, System Restore)

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Search for and delete the file.

Reboot into normal mode and re-enable system restore.

thanks bcaster...

I appreciate your help more than I can say.

TheTuna,

You are welcome. The problem is that I think you caught a brand new bad guy.

As long as you can use Hijack to remove it from the Run keys in the registry, and delete it , you should be okay. I would feel happier if you posted a complete Hijack Log here to see if it is hiding somewhere else.

You need to use Config under Hijack: check on the first page to enable the logging of running processes, and then under the Misc Tools, list empty and minor sections in the log.

Post the log back here.

bcaster, thanks for the interest... here's the log

It would be hard to convince me that the following entry is not a bad guy:

Autorun entries from Registry:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Start = C:\WINDOWS\AStart

. Let Hijack remove this entry.

. Disable System Restore (Start, All Programs, System Utilities, System Restore)

. Boot into Safe Mode

Start, Run, CMD
del /s /q c:\windows\astart.*

Reboot into Normal mode.

Do not forget to re-enable System Restore.

I had read that Astart was legit (don't recall where).

I'll go ahead and kill that sucker though.

I appreciate the level of detail you put in your instructions... even though I'm a seasoned I/T professional and didn't require that level of detail, I think it's an excellent example of how to communicate effectively on a level that the novice and professional alike can use.

Take this star... ;)

Astart.exe may well be a legitimate part of the Asus support package for its video adapters. What bothered me was:

. Normally there are other Asus tools loaded as well;
. Normally the launch location is from c:\windows\system32

You might explore whether you wanted these installed:

Every time I look at the hijack log, i see something else that I question as well. The problem that keeps popping up is that I don't 100% know what is or isn't supposed to be there. Hence the need for folks like you.

Now another issue has come up. Upon installing hijack/spybot/adaware on the home pc and upon removing some 80 bad guys from that pc, it's internet connection died.

No problem I thought... I'll just jump back to the laptop and grab the winsock repair program someone posted here and all will be well. Well, the laptop couldn't connect to the internet either. Lucky for me, it was bed time when that happened, so I just blew it off until today.

Ok, tossed the aforementioned Winsock fix (thanks to smah and bcaster for suggesting it) onto the laptop and viola, connection restored.

Now, when I get home, I'm going to do a ipconfig /release and /renew first... my cheap little router seems to faint every now and then, and I should have remembered to try that first. I'm really not sure if the winsock is corrupt or not, and this will be a good test.

[fish] No Dolphins were harmed in the posting of this message... Dolphin Friendly Tuna!

1. Most of the tools you used offer a restore from backup option. Sometimes what you need to do is revert through that feature your machine, and more selectively decide what to remove.

2. The WinsockFix tool (from a Tek-Tips forum member) is a favorite of mine.
It will easily fit on a floppy. I have had forum members report that they had to go to their public library to download the tool, but it did fix the issues they were having.

In this thread: thread779-730920
I discussed how to do what the tool does by hand. My strongest recommendation is to use the tool if you can.

3. My personal guess is that it will sort your issue.

I think we cross posted...

[fish] No Dolphins were harmed in the posting of this message... Dolphin Friendly Tuna!

Bill, I failed to mention that no changes had been made on my laptop... all was working fine on that one. Stepped over to the PC and hijacked/spybotted it, then lost connection.

THEN i went to the laptop and found it not able to connect... hence my feeling that something had caused my router to pass out again...

This message comes to you from the laptop, so all is good on it after running winsockfix (but I'm at the office, not at home)... we'll see what happens after 5 PM. Until then, thanks again!

It's a dlink (DI 604) and it's a revision E. It's their cheap little internet gateway, and I've never updated the firmware.

When at home, poke around this site:
I should note in the interest of full disclosure that I am bcastner, MVM-DSLR, and like the Broadband Reports site quite a bit.

But I think in an objective way this is the best D-Link user Forum on the web.

And yes, D-Link Tech Support pays people to read this site all day long.

and there I was calling you bcaster... tomorrow I'll learn to read gooder.

[fish] No Dolphins were harmed in the posting of this message... Dolphin Friendly Tuna!

in looking at the picture of a di 604, I realized it's not the one I have. I'll have to look at the model when I get home. I really thought it was a di 604.

I have been called worse. I just thought it fair in recommending the site that I disclose my "exalted" status and admit my bias.

Merry Christmas to you.

yeah, i hear ya

And Merry Christmas to you as well!

And for the record, call me Tuna...
