Microsoft Access on Terminal Services & Small Business Server Windows 2003

1. What version of MS Access do I need to allow remote users on DSL to connect and update forms, print reports, etc.?

2. Will Small Business Server Windows 2003 support this for up to 2 remote users & 4 local users at the same time?

3. 3 Users are currently using Access 97 on a peer-to-peer network hosted on a Windows 2000 PC.

4. Any other considerations? If wrong forum, pls advise.

Thank you.

If the database and application are going to be on the terminal server, then the answer would depend on the version of the Access databases being used. You can run more than version of Access. Note that Access is run from the terminal server, not on the remote dekstop. (Or this would defeat the purpose of using a terminal server)

2. Will Small Business Server Windows 2003 support this for up to 2 remote users & 4 local users at the same time

The Terminal Server license is addition to the the Windows OS license. It may be available for a trial basis but when the evaluation period expires you better run for your cheque book. And then you may have to re-configure the system again -- better to do it right the first time, or experiment on trial basis for a short period of time without spending a lot of time in configuration.

There is a limit to the number of users for Small Biz - I am not sure what it is - but it should easily meet your needs.

3. 3 Users are currently using Access 97 on a peer-to-peer network hosted on a Windows 2000 PC

And the question or issue is???

Terminal Server can handle this. You might consider upgrading to Office 2000, XP or newer -- Micro$oft no longer sells and no longer supports Office 97 products.

4. Any other considerations? If wrong forum, pls advise.

You might want to sample views from Windows 2000 Server or other similar site.

Thanks Richard.

#1. Exactly which Access do I use on the Terminal Services Server for the remote users? It is understood local users can use this version. We will replace Client's old server with Windows 2003 Small Business Server.

#2. I'll confirm status of Terminal Services CALs - client access licenses with Dell.

#3. Access 97 being replaced as per #1 above. Background info.

Just curious - [cheque book - do you mean check book?] Never seen this spelling before.

Thanks for your feedback & assistance. Deeply appreciated.
FYI: AVG at is an excellent free antivirus.

Since Access will run within it's own memory on the server, use resources on the server, etc, the version is not important for the end user.

Where you may get into problems is if you try to run more than one version of Access to support legacy systems. I would recommend to use one version of Access, and upgrade the databases as requried.

Cheque as in cheque book
Check as in check mark
A non USA thing.

Thanks for the star

Richard - Thank you.

On this topic: "Where you may get into problems is if you try to run more than one version of Access to support legacy systems. I would recommend to use one version of Access, and upgrade the databases as requried."

Exactly. I plan to fully replace old Access with newest version. I also learned the explanation of installing Access on the server as long as you have enough licenses for the workstations from Microsoft pre-sales support.

Microsoft said Access will support Terminal Services also.

(Sorry, I was delayed in getting back to you during a budget phase with this client).

(Cheque just seems odd to USA guys - thanks for info.)

Very best regards, will provide feedback in a later posting.
