We have installed Access 97 and Access XP on users Windows 2000 Professional PCs. Users are locked down on their workstations and only given rights to what is needed.

Occasionally users receive the following error when trying to open an Access 97 database:

Microsoft Access can't be started. Microsoft access was unable to initialize the Windows registry. Rerun microsoft access or Microsoft office setup to reinstall Microsoft access.

Our workaround is to logon as Administrator on the user PC, open an Access97 database, close it, then open an AccessXP database, close it, then reopen an Access97 database, close it. Then have the user log back on and they are ok.

They do not have a problem until they have an accessxp database open and try to open an access97 database at the same time.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Thanks - Kristi

Either avoid opening ac97 database when an acXP is open,
or migrate all 97 databases.

Hope This Helps, PH.

As usual, I agree with PHV - (how many times have you been tipster of the week PHV?) - you have to migrate sooner or later.

Running two versions of Access maintenance issue - I suspect the registry entry may be because Access is trying to change the file association. This causes Office to update / change its configuration - this fails of course in a locked down environment.

I run Access 97 and 2K at the same time. File association uses A97 - registry entry thing. When I need to open up A2K, I open the application and then open the database, or use a short cut that opens A2K + target database.

Is there a way to unlock the File Association function for "Users"? In the registry or group policy?
