So... Since upgrading you can no loner do a negative transaction (a return) on a sold out menu item. They actually have to launch manager procedures, set the count to one, do the return, open manager procedures, and set it back to one from two.

Am I missing something? Or is it really impossible to return a sold out item now?

Why set it back to one from two? Doesn't the return minus the count? I have not seen this yet however.

What I mean is this. You have a sold out item. Meaning 0 on the item availability. You return 1 item; however, because you can't do a return on the sold out item you must first set it to 1 available. You do your return; now you have 2 items (you have to do the return rather than just setting it to 1 and leaving at that so your revenue balances). Now you have 2 items though.. To get it back to 1 you can't sell an item because then your tracking is wrong, so you have to go back into manager procedures and change it from 2 available to 1 available.

It's something I've only seen on RES 5.1 and beyond. Prior to that I could do returns on sold out items no problem.

Returns shouldn't change the count, those are items that are made, served and returned to the kitchen/bar. Voids should add an item back to the count.

Considering I usually only see quick count used for retail items, being able to hit Void first, then the item, and therefore ring in a negative of that item has always been useful. Can't seem to do this anymore. Can only be correct by either an error correct or by re-opening the check and voiding it. This only happens once it is sold out though.. all the way up until then, you can do the return just fine.

This used to be an issue that took a while to be fixed a few versions back. I would not be surprised if they bugged it up again. It does not sound like it is working as intended.
