MICROS POS using "free" giftcards...why are we paying sales tax?

We opened a new restaurant and gave away a ton of free gift cards. When customers use them, the sales ring up as taxable and we end up paying sales tax. How do we avoid this?

Your gift cards would have to be set up as discounts/promos, not payments. Depending on your GC vendor they may be able to transfer the balances to promo accounts.
