The journals are in fact the copies; they are just flat files with all of the transactions logged in them, plus anything else that was set to log there. They are the backups being made, usually rotated nightly into compressed archives, of information from the database. If you deleted them, they are gone, unless you had a third party piece of software that was backing them up.
