Hi Friends,

please help me resolve my microphone issues, I am not able hear what I speak into microphone on D630. I can do this with out any issues on a thinkpad. is that a sigmatel issue?

Thinkpad has soundmax drivers which works sweet, but D630 sigmtel doesn't work.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

Double click on the speaker icon in the bottom right taskbar to open the mixer and make sure the microphone is not muted.

I know what you mean.

unfortunately I don't even see that option with sigmatel driver. it's there in my other computer but this one.
All I see under microphone is Advanced button, which has microphone boost option, not mute/unmute.

I deal with the Latitude D series on a daily basis at work. Over the years, I have concluded that the fastest way to get components to function correctly is to remove any agents or control panels from the Run key in the registry. This goes for video (Intel and nVidia being the worst), audio, touchpads, wireless keyboards and mice, media programs, etc.

Personally, I feel the run key should only have a startup for Anti-Virus.

look at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Thankyou all for the responses,

linney,
I have visited the links but I can't correlate my issue with any of those. They all seem to have issues with mic itself. Mine works perfectly with any chat/yahoo/skype sessions.

Geates, I haven't tried your thought, however, I don;t think it is really realted to startup things. the only thing I could find related to audio in there is the volume icon in the taskbar i.e. SigmatelSysTrayApp: %ProgramFiles%\SigmaTel\C-Major Audio\WDM\stsystra.exe
and I am sure noone wants to disable that, Atleast I am not yet. let me know if you still think I should try that.

And Dell really sucks in some aspects, I called the dell support and they are asking me to pay $250+ just to even look at it which they are not even ready to listen to the issue in first place without the money, let alone resolving it. I seriously doubt they have a solution to this.

And do we really have to stick to this damn sigmatel (C-major), OR is there a better audio driver that I can getby with, I tried googling but couldn't find any for D630.

seriously, is there any person who really has the function working that I am talking about on a Dell Lattitude?

What I am looking for is to hear back from speakers what I speak into microphone(external), this correlates back to what ANFPS26 exactly said and ofcourse the option is not available in DELL, which I can do with all my other computers (just one), but not this DELL.

Thanks

1. Have you ever had this same laptop's microphone working in the past?

2. Do you have an external microphone you can try/test, to make sure that it's software and not hardware?

3. Can you try to record the sound to see if the computer is picking up sound, but just not spitting it back out the speakers? If you don't have an audio recording/editing program installed, you can always open Windows Sound Recorder (at least in Windows XP):
Start Menu - All Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Sound Recorder.
a. Basically, all you do is start the recording, and make some sounds near the microphone. If the computer is picking them up, you'll see it on the wave form.
