All,

Thanks for reading my post.

Scenario:
Windows NT4 SP6 (PDC) and Windows NT/TS 4 SP6 with Metaframe 1.8

- User profiles reside on the PDC shared folder (which I don't understand
the reason why to keep UP across server)

Question 1. Why is best practice to copy user profiles on another server
and/or location? I think it increases network traffic as well as CPU
Performance plus users have to wait for the profile to download to the local
metaframe server so they can start their session. By the way, we are using
roaming profiles. I'm about to move UP to the local Metaframe Server and
place them in a seperate drive where users can't see but the server can.

Question 2. I noticed that users are sharing the same desktop. For instance,
Let's say I logon to the citrix server and I placed a shortcut on my desktop
to access The same shortcut appear on other users desktop,
Why?. Each user has their own Terminal Server profile path where their
profile is stored.

Also, if you happen to know a website where I can visit and learn more about
citrix and terminal server configuration OTHER THAN CITRIX.COM it will be
great.

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi,

Profiles shouldn't be stored on a PDC, it should be a dedicated profile server, but if needs must!

1) When you have multiple servers, if you make a change on one server, it's replicated to all other Citrix servers you log onto.

2) You shouldn't really do this, you can check in the registry where your folders are but I'd be suspicious of your servers configuration. I think that your server has some sort of corruption but could be a real pain to fix!

Patrick has a good site

This is Rick's site who works for Citrix and is brilliant!

Other people have sites in here, look at some posting with xs4citrix, he has a good site as well.

Hope this helps,
Carl.

Depending on your Citrix frame roaming profiles aren't necessarily manditory however if your doing load balancing between multiple servers then its the only way your users will get their files/settings.

Using policies you can redirect folders, lock down the desktop and configure the items you want your users to have.

One thing to keep in mind with Citrix is that in many cases what one user does to the server will often affect everyone. Thats why we lock ours down.

A must have book is Windows NT/2000 Thin Client Solutions by Todd Mathers. I used it when I started working with TS and Citrix and couldn't have made it without it.

A good policies book is a recommendation also.
