I try to install oracle 9i on my XP home edition, but met a problem. The system report error message during installation as follows:

Exception String: The value of the enviroment variable PATH is more than 1023 characters. This value cannot be set.

It seems it is the XP path limitation cause this error. But I don't find the place to increase this setting. Have anyone experience such problem? How do you solve it?

Thanks

David

David,

Copying and pasting directly from Oracle's "Certify & Availability" MetaLink web pages for Oracle 9i databases for Windows XP:

"Editions:
32-bit Windows XP has 2 editions/versions, Professional and Home. Oracle will ONLY certify on Professional.
64-bit Windows XP 2003 is supported with a 64-bit Oracle database, not 32-bit."

Therefore, if you get Oracle 9i to somehow work on your uncertified "XP Home version", then you are just lucky. There are technical reasons that Oracle does not certify on XP Home edition.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Thank any way. It seems I can only use my windows 2000 server for it.

Hi, SantaMufasa:

I sovled it by cutting the system environment path, in order to leave free space for the new oracle environment path setting before the installation and restore the cut part later. Now all software works well on the XP.

David,

Could you please post the specific code you devised to resolve your problem, and the steps that you followed to achieve success? I'm certain it would be useful to others.

SantaMufasa:

Actually, it looks like a bug for oracle installation on XP home edition. I took following steps to avoid this problem:

1. Cut the system path setting, e.g.,
old: path = c:\sybase12-5\......
new: path =
2. Install the oracle XP, this time, no 1023 environment variable setting limitation error message. The system path setting becomes as follows:
path = c:\oracle\ora92\...

3. Paste the old system path setting at the end of the new system path, e.g.,
path = c:\oracle\ora92\..., c:\sybase12-5\...

Now it's all right. From above, I use this method just to avoid this problem by tricking the installation process. There should be other direct method for this problem, but I don't know.
