Yesterday my win2K server reared its ugly head and started giving me fits when assigning users' rights to folders and files. First, when doing any kind of modifications, it takes forever if it finishes at all. There are lots of files that, when attempting to modify the permissions, tell me I don't have sufficient rights to do so, even though I'm logged on as admin and have full control over the folder and files in question.

Obviously, something here is badly screwed up, but what?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Even though you're Administrator, you either don't own the files, or don't have full control. In the security tab of the properties of a folder, click Advanced - Go to the owner tab, and replace ownership on all subcontainers and objects. Apply that, then go back to the permissions tab, make sure the account you're using has full control, and reset permissions on all child objects. This will replace any custom permissions you have - so if you need to retain those custom permissions, you'll have to do this one folder at a time, and not replace permissions in one fell swoop. You can also uncheck allow inheritable permissions to propogate from parent to this folder. What this does is you can have a home folder that is shared. Leave that checked and give everyone full permission to that folder. Then uncheck that on any sub-folders within it, and remove everyone and only give the people you want access to it add in. You can give them full control, read only, etc. How I have my network set-up. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson

I agree with mark, also download the service pak 2 and the new security patches and implement them to resolve other security and permission related issues.

Filthpig, you were absolutely correct. Somehow permissions got all screwed up and I was not the owner of any of the files that were giving me problems. I re-established ownership of the folders and files in question, reassigned the user's rights, and everything was fixed!

Thanks to all you guys for the help. That's why I come to Tek-Tips!
