Message Tranfer Agent won't start

I can't start either the Message Transfer Agent or Internet Mail Service. When I re-booted the server and go to the event viewer I get a message:

"The Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service service depends on the Microsoft Exchange Transfer Agent service which failed to start because of the following error:
%%O"

I also notice in Active Directory Sites & Services, under Connectors for Exchange there is nothing. I thought that SMTP should be in there.

I think it may be an SMTP problem.

Just a random thought because I had a similar problem with services not starting a few years ago - are your disc partitions full or near capacity?

My log files had taken over the HD...

Sounds like a corruption in the registry.
