I recently installed Windows XP and like it. However, I am constantly being bombarded with Message Service Popups which declare that my computer is in terrible trouble. I think these are just ads which my adware and spyware have not spotted. Can you tell me how to get rid of these? If they are true, can you tell me how to fix the situation myself?

They are not true.
Start, Run, sevices.msc

Find the entry for the Windows Messenger Sevice. Stop the service. Then set its startup to Disabled.

I did as you said, but I could not find the Windows Messenger. I found one that was NOT Windows. It might be because I took the messenger service off in Add/Remove Programs, trying to stop the popups. Do you have anything else for me to try?

Is this Win XP SP2?

(To find out right click on my computer and click properties)

It is called just "Messenger" under services.msc
This is completely different and independent of the Windows Messenger IM client software.
