Hi all,
I have a stand alone oracle 8i. First I installed the Oracle 8i db on my pc, and I was able to open the database without any problem. Afterward, I installed Dev 6i and when I tried to open my db again, it will give me "message file sp1(lang).msb not found", could someone please help me please!

Hi,
You need to check your Oracle_Home setting..The installation of 6i may have changed it..

Turkbear,
What should I be checking? Please help!

Hi,
Look for a program in your Start menu called Oracle Home Selector..See what it says are your Oracle_Homes..For the 8i tools use the Home associated with that, for the 6i the other one..

Oracle 'looks' in ORACLE_HOME/[tool/productname]/mesg
for most of its message files, so if ORACLE_HOME 'points' to a location where a particular product is not installed, it will give an error like the one you got..

p.s.
If you are comfortable in the Registry, you can check
HKLM/Software/Oracle and see what HOMES are set..( Be careful and do not try to change anything here,, it can have unexpected results..

Turkbear,
My oracle_home is "C:\Dev" which is the directory where I installed Dev 6i, is this correct.

Thank you!

I installed Oracle 8i on c:\oracle. Thank you.

Hi,
Ok Then...
When you use a tool from Oracle 8i, you first need to change your Default_home to c:\oracle

Use the Oracle Home Selector to change default homes..
Also in your PATH environment variable be sure BOTH c:\oracle\bin and c:\dev\bin are listed..

If you do not have the Oracle Home Selector you may have installed the products in the wrong order..
Des6i should be installed BEFORE 8i ( the 6i installer does not know about multiple homes, the 8i one does..)

Thank you very much for your help. I know what's wrong now, when I install Dev 6i, I should enter a different Home with a different path with the oracle 8i installation, which I didn't do before, now it is up and running. Thanks again.

Hi,
Glad to help..
Oracle often requires multiple homes for varied versions of its products..( 8.0.x, 8.1.x,9.i,Des6.0, Des 6.i)
and it is often very confusing..The best 'rule of thumb' is to install in order of age...Older apps first
( Those that use Orainst and not the Java-Based installer)
then the Java based ones.
Often, but not always, the installer will warn you about
installing into an incompatible home, heed the warning.
