Strmwalker,
Thanks for the quick reponse. Those settings allowed me to connect to the modem great. Currently Meridian Mail is only setup on a single local terminal (VT520). My plan is to use an A/B box so i can flip the switch and be able to log in and connect to Mermail via modem. Well i managed to dial up and connect to the modem with a windows based laptop using Procomm Plus 4.8, but once connected, i cannot get a response from Mermail. Thus leaving me with a big ol fat blank of what to do. The A/B switch is set to B on my switch box (local=A, remote=B, Mermail=C). Any suggestions on troubleshooting would be great. Thanks so much for your help again!!

My current config is as follows:
1. 9600 baud 8-N-1 config on internal laptop modem.
2. external modem is setup as per above specs in a previos post.

BTW i kinda forgot to mention, i have an 81c.

motox2..does the modem answer?if so hit ctrl r
see if it refreshes to mermail screen your f keys
will not be the same unless you have the right keyboard
emulation the f1 ,f2,f3,f4 keys will work.

no problems only solutions

You have the cable from the Meridian Mail going into the I/O port and then the monitor connected with a cable on the A Port and the Modem connected to the B Port.

You might check the cable going to the modem. Try putting a Null modem on there. The cable could be wrong. Does the Monitor work off the A/B box?

Thanks again strmwalker, how do you map out the keys so that F6 through F10 work?

Janya,
the cables are layed out like you described above. I didnt have a whole lot of time today to try different scenarios but on wednesday i will try a few more. In any case i really appreciate your help. And if you happen to know of some other possible fixes, please send em my way. Happy New year to all!!!

Connect the modem to the MM w/o the A/B box and start from there.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

F5 would be ^[[21~

F6 through 10 aren't used. You use F1 - F5 in Procomm.

Ok guys please forgive me here, im just trying to understand why this isnt working. I believe i got the local modem setup down, now the question is, What is the setup of the remote modem to be able to communicate with the local modem if the remote modem is an internal PC type modem? Sorry to keep this thing to death, its just that i never thought it would be this difficult. thanks again 4 everyones help!!

PS.
Is the null modem cable on the local modem side or would that be on the remote modem side, keeping in mind im using an internal remote PC modem?

You only use a NULL modem cble when you are connecting directly from your PC to the MM or Switch. another words you don't have a modem.

Thanks ACE, but is there settings on the remote PC modem that need to be configured as well to communicate with the local modem thats attached to the MM?

what is the MM set for? should be 9600, 8, n, 1 and your PC should be set the same.

or I have seen some MM set for 9600, 7, n, 1

OK. There are two types of cables that can be shipped with the Meridian Mail, and also sitting around a phone room. There are 25pr/25pr cables that are straight through for terminals and some that are set up for modems.

Take the cable out of the Meridian Mail and put in the I/O port, of the A/B box. Take one cable from the A port to the terminal and one cable from teh B port to the modem. If the terminal works and the modem doesn't check the part numbers to see if they are the same on the cables. If they are the same, put a null modem between the cable and the modem and this should solve the problem. If the modem works and the terminal does not, put the null modem between the cable and the terminal.

Ok everyone, we figured it out and i would like to give a Huge thank you to everyone involved. Ace's last comment there was the kicker. I checked and sure enough up above the ceiling tile about 20 feet from the MAT, there was a NULL adapter. Apparently who ever installed this thing had no intention of putting a modem online with it. In any case, after disco'ing the adapter and installing it on the "A" side of the A/B box, the modem, on the "B" side now works flawlessly!!
Now i know i read this somewhere before too, but maybe one last question on this subject before i put it to sleep.
I have the F1-F5 keys setup no problem, but one thing i noticed is that i cant backspace. Is there a fix for that?
Thank you very much yet again!!

To backspace, use the "delete" key. That should work on VT100.
