On Friday about 2:00 PM the Hard Drive crapped out. Since the wonderful Tape Drive had messed up and I didn't have rotating Tapes, the last backup it did was partially invalid so ALL WAS LOST. After getting a new drive, re-installing the software from the SLOOOOW Tape, then re-keying 30 Voice Services Menu Services and about 150 mailboxes I finished around 11:00 am on Saturday. (Actually didn't get the drive to get started until about 11:30 PM Friday night so 12 LONG hours of work)

All seemed well, after doing the recordings and what not I did a backup and verified it showed it was there. I ran a system audit and made sure I had ran clean with no SEER codes for the last few hours.

Sunday Morning (It's first night alone) the system quite sometime between midnight and 3:00 AM. I drove out to site and restarted the Meridian Mail. The system came up like normal, no problems to be seen. I ran a few audits since that was the only thing I could think was happening at that time of night. All well, NO SEER CODES before the crash.

Monday Morning 2:00- System down again. I modemed in and the AML is disabled but since I used ACMS it says AutoSetup so That isn't the issue. The Agents showed BUSY and in Logout. I looked at the history and it went down at 00:32 via the CSA0001 and the AML Link showing disabled via the time stamp. The Option 11 doesn't do its nightly routines until 1:00 AM so I don't know what could be causing the problem. Anyway now a trip to the site to reboot again. I wish I could do this remotely so I can baby sit it everymorning until I can figure it out. Any ideas on the problem OR how to INI or Reload the switch remotely to save me the 45 mile drive???

i would do a partial backup, then replace the hd, then do an install then restore from backup.. sounds like a hd, the only thing else i could think of would be a device number conflict (but it does boot?) or a possible patch.. get a new dep list, back the drol up to 23:00 to see if that changes the time of occurance.. might add 48 to your ovly. still sounds more like hardware, BUT where is hardware picking up a time stamp? sounds like an overtime box. my rls 13 is going in the dumpster this week, no takers on ebay.. that was a surprise

Just in case you missed it, I replaced the HD (with another "old/used" Hard Drive since the original drive went out. The original was making BAD BAD noises. The one in there now is supposed to be good but you know how "used" equipment can be.

Do you think the symptoms seem to be a HD issue so this one MIGHT be bad?? I do have a Partial backup. I have no way to get patches, I will post the EXACT version of 12 that I have. The voice mail time was set by me under General Options. The time stamp I see with the AML Link down was what I saw on the history printout.

Oh, FYI, I read that for the first time while I was waiting for the stupid tape to load. There is just so much on this Forum to read, I will be sending techs out this week to do partial backups on the rest of the Meridian Mails we have. Dang tapes are SO EXPENSIVE though. $55 each for 2.5 GB. Maybe I can sell my old Commodore 64 for a few thousand since it seems antiquated things are worth more. Thank for you help.

OK, Update. Saturday and Sunday I had left the system at 11:00 AM and it was really low call volume. The system crashed at about 2:00 the first night and about 00:30 the second night. Well, now, the system was brought online Monday Morning at 8:00 since it went down early this morning. It ran with moderate volume of calls and crashed now at about 12:05. Seems like we got 4 hours out of it. I had an AML link still but the TN's via LD 32 said logout and 2 of them said something about a server putting them out. I could get the MM logo screen but could not do anything. I did a reset of the VM and now it is working again. Does this shed any new light?

Sorry if this may have been mentioned, but if you can remove the tape during this time of trouble (before you leave?), the system will not try to boot from it before its hard drive. At a minimum, it's at least faster

I actually turned off the Tape Drives Power. But I HAVE TO do a power off/on to get it to restart.

Well, that seriously sucks. I've never done this, but what of you could obtain some Seagate SCSI drives on your own, as close to spec as possible, install them, don't tell Nortel too much...just let them realize they need to format, fdisk, etc. I suggest this since I've never been convinced the drives are any harder to prep for MerMail than they are for any other OS.

About 70% of the people you deal with on HDD replacement have never even FDISK'd any drive in their lifetime. Maybe 1% or less have done it on a UNIX/BSD OS. Again...I have only pondered this situation...but I have FDISK'd a UNIX drive :) and I don't know more than one or two UNIX commands.

The place I got the drive from has given me another drive so I will be doing that next time. Backing up Full and Partial the drive now, and trying to reload the Full Backup on the "new drive". If that doesn't work I will do an install then restore the partial backup. If all else fails I will just stick this "rebooting" drive back in and at least they will be up. I will update.

another long shot, and i've done it twice.. take a new scsi drive apart. replace the disk stack on that new drive with the disk stack on the original failed hd.. 99 percent of the drives that fail are mechanical.. another installer on site said at the time he thought i was crazy, but it did work.. it may be a last ditch effort but after 48 hours on that job, it saved the how fast can you type repair[color]
