Merging Records

I have 2 tables with pieces of information in them. Some of the records are the same, others are different. I want to take them and merge them together to fill in the gaps in the records. Is there a way to do this so that if the record is in the main table as well as the 2nd table, that it will just fill in the gaps, otherwise just add the new record to the table?
