Merge hanging not prompting for next tape 1

we are running arcserve 2000 with windows sp2 (we removed sp 3 and all hotfixes after that and the security roll up package because it was preventing files from restoring properly). However, when we try to merge tapes it will do one tape, beep like it usually does when asking for the next tape, but no dialog box appears to tell it to continue. So it can't continue the job and hangs. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this? We had a critical server die yesterday and since we had to reinstall arcserve due to other problems a month ago we have to remerge all our tapes for last month which is over 35 or so tapes. CA support has not been helpful. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

GO the to the services....
go to each of the arcserve services and check if you have
the "Interact with desktop Option" selected...
