last week, after installing a divx codec, my computer, running windows XP pro, started slowing down immenseley every 5-10 minutes. I believe it has something to do with memory, because using task manager, it usually shows only a normal level of activity with the cpu. By slowing down immensely, i mean so slow it takes 30 seconds for the start menu to pop up. I am running a computer with 240 mb ram, 20 gb hard drive, and duron 850. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

use the taskmanager to see where the cpu time is going If the solution is here, let us know it was helpful so others can benefit from it as too

Have you tried removing that codec to see if the situation improves?

Try disabling any unrequired services that are running in background.
