I have setup a Exchange 2000 server in a Windows 2000
environment. Everything was fine but now we are seeing
an error pop up when trying to send mail via (POP/SMTP).
I have looked it up on the knowledge database and they
say it's because of Antigen and have a work around for
it. The problem is that we don't have Antigen
installed. Here is the error that we get when trying to
send:

The message could not be sent because the server rejected
the sender's e-mail address.
The sender's e-mail address was 'user@companyname.com'.
Subject 'Re: Possible CTB Mail Server Problem',
Account: 'account name', Server: 'serverIPaddress',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '452 4.3.1 Out of
memory',
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 452, Error
Number: 0x800CCC78

Any ideas?

0x800ccc78 means IXP_E_SMTP_REJECTED_SENDER. You get it, and the 452 4.3.1 when the number of messages in the SMTP queue reaches 90% of the value set in the maxmessageobjects registry value [100,000 is the default if not present]. Antigen 6.5 was a problem some time back, but it's not the only possible cause of this error.

Basically, your queues are backing up. You may actually have 90,000 messages in there or, if the maxmessageobjects value was set lower at some point inthe past, some number less. The drive on which mailroot resides could be full, or there might be permissions problems. Then again, it might just be that you're scanning mailroot with a realtime virus scan or backing up with an OFA, which is locking files. You'll have to investigate.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm assuming that the queues are filled. If I go in and delete e-mails out of the Badmail, Queue, and pickup folders under "D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\" then we should be ok? Is there any preventative way to have these folders cleaned every so often so that we won't run into this problem again (if this is the case)?

You can delete them, Q321825. It's probably more important to find out why the queues are filling up. You'll need to do some investigating.

It seems that we are being used as a relay server. This is causing our Exchange server to get swamped with SPAM messages and NDR's. Is there a way to setup authentication on the server in order to stop this (SSL)? We currently use this Exchange server for POP3 remote access so that puts a little twist into the whole scenario. Thanks so much for the help so far! Right now the only thing that I can do is setup Domain restrictions on the relay in order to slow it down for the time being.
