Hello my desktop ( e machine)has only 4.01 GB and i want to upgrade the memory and i'm new to it. I checked my memory chip and it's a infineon chip with the following info HYS64V8300GU-8-C / PC100-222-620. Does it have to be an infeon chip i upgrade to? Does it have to be PC100 type ? I don't need a whole lot more memory but definetly more than what i got.

Thanks !

I'm confused. You only have 4GB of memory!! That's more than enough. Besides, 4GB is every 32-bit OS's limit. You would have to be using a 64-bit system to use more memory.

Perhaps you are getting the hard drive space and memory amount mixed up. Go to Start -> Run and type dxdiag hitting OK. It will show you how much memory is in your system. Anything at or above 128MB is good, and you won't see much difference after going over 512MB. Besides, in an older system like yours, I doubt it will support much more than 384MB.

Also, you do want to stick with PC100. Using faster memory will not make your memory system run any faster and could cause undesirable compatibility problems. Buy from a vendor who will sell "double-sided" PC100 if you can, and stay away from "generic" and "house" brands.

Yes you are correct. My memory is 64mb ram, and my harddrive is 4.01 gb, how can i upgrade to more space ??

Simple. Go to one of the two sites above.

Pricewatch will list a ton of vendors for PC100. Just make sure you don't go with the generic-type brands I mentioned earlier. Also make sure you buy from a vendor who either guarantees compatibility or sells "double-sided" memory modules (if you don't know what that means, they will). I always suggest you do business over the phone and actually hear the guarantee and return policy.

Or you can go to Crucial.com which sells decent quality Micron sticks. You just have to know what motherboard you have or model number of your "name-brand" system (i.e. HP Pavilion 8610). The online configurator at that site will automatically select compatible memory for your system.
