Greetings,

Have exshausted searches on this topic

I have a user who cannot see the data in a table column which is MEMO. Other users can see the data. These are tables linked from our replicated data. So my suspcion is that somehow the local pc environment for that user can not accomplish the setup it needs to deal with MEMO pointers or whatever. Problem is I don't know where to start to figure out the problem with the PC. Help is appreciated

Hello.

Memo field in expressions in QueryDef do behave that way under certain circumstances. I don't think that I can provide an solution for Your problem, but try to work arround (that PC's):
1. - Access environment (are all references setup or not? Are they proper versions?);
2. - Do You have other Access versions on that mashine installed? If yes, unninstall them.;
3. - If this doesn't work, format disk, install all again;
4. - Does this PC use Office SPacks ? Which version?
5. - Does it have all libraries installed?

Also, bare in mind, that MEMO field will not 'operate' in GROUPing QueryDefs (One cannot group MEMO field data).

The problem is definitevly under 'technical' category.

And one must keep logics in mind (no woodoo is 'True').

At worst point, hardware can cause Microsoft products to behave that way.

Also, check if You installed latest version of App. on that PC too.

Also, I have expirienced such behaviour when I left (in my older code) to many recordsets UNSET or UNCLOSED. Although this shouldn't present an issue with newer Access version (this problem is with flags/corruption), but maybe.

Does Your app. on that PC return any messages (corrupted or something - in such case is definitly harware issue)?

So to conclude:
- references
- Office Service Packs
- different dll(s) in system32 (different from other Pc-s)
- hardware problems (corruption)
- Query GROUPing MEMO field (this is connected to version of YOur App. installed there).

And since You don't say that it dowsn't work there, but only don't display memo field, check out code :).

I agree,

More than likely it's a setup issue. If it works on other PC's but not that one then that specific PC is probably setup differently in some way. Alfalf gives great advice with respect to the Office Service Packs. Another possibilty would be user groups or Windows SP's too. I know WinXP SP2 screwed up alot of stuff on my Laptop (which I promptly formatted).

Good Luck, Let us know how it turns out! :)

Thanks alfalf and mishbaker. It actually is not even in a query mode, but just opening up the linked table object. This ensured that no query or sql issues were involved. she opens the table - data not in the memo field column, we at the helpdesk open the table - data is there. I am going to send your check list up to the college tech in norhtern Minnesota, and do suspect that ultimately a resinstall of Access my be the best answer. Also, I think your reference about diferent versions might be an issue. I think they mentioned a recent upgrade. I will let you know how it turns out and thanks again!

Hi

A trifle obvious but are you SURE you are both looking at the same data?

ie could it be that she is openning up a front end with a link to a different table to the one in the frontend you are opening up?

Yes fairly certain. My counterpart Marshall walked her through deleting the table and then linking it again throught the correct odbc connection. Same results. We also sent the user down to our operations center to try it on that techs pc and she could see the data. So her pc environment is highly suspect.
Thanks Ken! -

Hope you all catch this update. When notified that the PC was the suspected cause of the problem they set up a new computer for her and all is well. Probably worth it rather then taking time to isolate the errant setup. You guys are great!

Im not sure if this is gonna help. But I oddly enough just had the same/similar problem. But it happened because I pasted data into the memo field of my table. The data I pasted had breaks in it causing it to add additional lines even though the field couldnt show them. It happened in Access 2002 SP3. It however did not do this to me in Access 2000 SP?.

Just a heads up in case this happens to any of you again.
