After changing the media speed from within AIX with smitty devices fastpath, the speed shows 1000 full duplex:

but when I run entstat -d en1, it is still showing that the speed is set to auto-negotiation and that the media is running at full-duplex:

Can anyone explain this conundrum?

This is normal and suprising.
With AIX 5.1 ML4 i can not configure 1000_FULL_DUFLEX.
I got this configuration:

With AIX and giga ethernet you have to setup your cards in auto negociate mode.
This is the recommandation of IBM.
Your switch should be fixed to giga.
