I popped in a an old tape on 6/17 and ran an erase. I backup for about a week before the tape is full, then I repeat. That night at 11pm a backup job ran and was success (Exchange).

The next night, 6/18, the same job ran but came back with an I/O error after 29GB (normally) 47GB.

The next backup job was last night on 6/21 which was successful.

Today, I went to do a restore from 6/17, and it doesn't even have that job or the 6/18 (failed) job at all! When I look at the Media, the it says the media was allocated on 6/21, and there was one backup jobs worth of data used on the tape.

Did the I/O error cause Backup Exec 9.0 to just start over from scratch with the tape?

By Backup Exec saying that the tape was allocated on the 6/21, means that it overwrote the tape on that day.

Are you backups set to overwrite only?

justin2000,

Thanks for the reply.

My tapes are set to Overwritable, but the job isn't set up to overwrite the tape. It runs until the tape is full, then it ejects the tape.

I just checked this morning, and it ran OK. There is now 66GB used on the tape (33 yesterday).
