Meant to Upgrade - But Now Have 2000 & XP. Help!

Well, I bought full version of XP Pro ($300 at Best Buy, ouch!) and was assured that it would do all the Upgrade version would. I wanted to upgrade in a partition where Win2000 Pro was located. I just was never asked to select an upgrade option, despite the docs that indicated I would be able to do so. Now I have Windows (XP) and WinNt (2000) folders. I can boot into either one, but things are already a little odd here and there, and hard drive space is low with both operating systems installed (the partition is designed to hold op systems with apps in another partition).

Please advise on upgrading the Win2000 with XP and retaining all settings for desktop, shortcuts, etc. under these circumstances. Do I need to uninstall XP? Do I need to transfer settings, and is that the same as the upgrade in the end? How? Will that screw 2000? What should I have done to force the full version to do an Upgrade? Did you let the XP CD autorun in 2000, or did you boot from it?

If you let it autorun, it will ask if you want to upgrade the current OS. That's the easiest way. If you boot from it, I believe it will give a choice of a new install or an upgrade to the OS already found on the drive.

If you wish to get rid of 2000, you can delete the folder where it is stored. Then you will need to edit the BOOT.INI file (hidden file in the root of the boot drive) to remove the line for Windows 2000.

Adding to my last post.

If you wish to upgrade your 2000 to XP, the best way would be boot into 2000, and let the XP CD autorun and do the upgrade. Once this is done, you will have two copies of XP with a boot menu for both. Then, as in the previous post, edit the BOOT.INI to get rid of the unwanted one, and delete the folder for the unwanted OS (after you've determined you can boot to the good copy. Since both XPs will appear identical on the menu, make sure you identify which one is the good copy, and delete the other from the BOOT.INI. Make sure you backup that file in case you get it wrong the first time. Only after this is correct, delete the unwanted Windows folder.

The docs with XP are terrible. I booted via CD ROM. I ended up removing Windows folder when in 2000, and doing Upgrade install when in 2000. At that point I was given the upgrade option. Thanks for your help.
