Hello,

After we've upgraded the McAfee Virus Scan 4.5 to 4.5.1, the computers lag significantly. So far, we can't find any piece of info about this. Please help - any suggestion or info is appreciated.

There was another problem with the option to scan the boot record at startup. Some computers were unable to boot up at all when we had the scan boot record at startup selected. We have to live without it.

Thank you very much.

when you say the computer lags , when does it lag?
how did you upgrade?
had so much trouble with Mcafee I went out and got an oem Norton 2002 av works much better for me.
did mcafee come pre-installed?

we upgraded from 4.5 to 4.5.1 with sp1 (downloaded from the product upgrade of nai.com) by running the setup.exe and let it take it from there. originally, we had selected the option to scan the boot record at startup but some of them couldn't boot up at all. so, for the ones that didn't like the scan boot record option, we disabled it. however, they all now are very slow from boot up to shutdown with any application. some are worse than the others.

Have you tried uninstalling sp1, see if there is an improvement. Sounds like it is scanning all the time. Maybe someone here knows what to do ,as for me, like I said I use Norton 2002 with live updates, very good product, AVG is also very good and it is free. I have it on my sons Dell. Go thru your startup programs and see what is running at startup. LOL PEARL

If you upgraded to V4.5.1 you are running the commercial version. By installing SP1 some of our issues were resolved. We did some testing and found there were some significant slow downs. Try going into the System Scan Properties. In the System Scan Properties and the Download Scan Properties, click the Advanced Button and make sure the Enable Heuristics Scanning boxes are not checked. In addition, on the System Scan properties we do not check the Outbound files box and the Shutdown boxes. These can also cause problems.

hi ikayak, thank you very much for your tips. we tried your suggestion - deselected the options you mentioned - but it didn't seem to help in this case. are we missing something? most of these computers are as old as pentium 200MHz and 128MB ram. i'm thinking that the system hardware is also another factor. what are the differences between v4.5 and v4.5.1, anyway?

mcafee sucks. drop it and get norton. mcafee is the aol of virus protection...just sucks!

nh39; uninstall sp1, try it what you got to loose. you need to check system requirements. also check startup menu and see if might be entered twice.4.5 , 4.5.1 why?
best of luck PEARL LOL

hi pearl,

i've checked the startup menu, it looks ok - msconfig you mean? the copy i have comes with sp1, how do i uninstall just sp1? thanks.

any more suggestions, please?! [bigears]

You might post your problem in the McAfee forum and see if someone there has a solution:

Please come back and let us know if your
problem is fixed and what fixed it!! [thumbsup2]

You may want to check your system resources. If you have a lot of programs in your startup, you may have just added enough overhead with the new software to really bog things down. If your system resources are below 75% or so, try turning off everything in your startup except mcafee and see if it improves, then re-add what you need one at a time.
