McAfee Internet Suite can't install

I've just uninstalled McAfee AV.
When I try to install McAfee Internet Security Suite 7, I get a dialog box saying "Preparing Installation" and then nothing happens.

Looking at the Event Viewer, I find


"The server {CDECC4C3-7377-11D3-9A6C-00C04FF40D52} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."

I've removed all files and cleaned the registry of McAfee files.

I have all of the latest security updates and patches.

Any ideas?

Have you tried to install while in "safe mode"?

This could be you answer.

I tried your suggestion.

I still get

I'd consider this a lucky escape! You haven't got that total resource hog on your machine. I've seen so many machines where people just sit there for minutes waiting for McAfee to load - then everything runs slowly because they have 256MB RAM, and with McAfee loaded, machine's already using more than that.

Have you considered alternatives (eg, AVG, Microsoft Antispyware, XP's own firewall - I run with this combo, have no issues with unwanted intruders).

Apologies for not being helpful about loading McAfee - but it annoys me that a 'market leader' is so badly written (I'd apply that to Norton/Symantec too).

I have 1GB RAM in my machine and have used MIS before and it's been fine for me.

Windows built-in firewall doesn't seem to block that much, especially when you consider programs such as Syagte PFP!

I just want to get the VirusScan installed!

If all you want is VirusScan, there is no need to install the entire Internet Suite ( although they would like it if you to..)
