I just found out that XP Pro has a limit of 10 network connections. There are about 12 computers that I want to be able to connect to a server I have running XP Pro. Not everyone is connected to the server at one time. However once someone access the server it seems as though they tie up that connection whether they are actively using the server or not. Is there someway to juggle connections so that once someone is not access the server their connection is dropped?

Hopefully I was clear enough. Thanks for the help.

If you have 12 computers to network you should be looking at building a REAL network.

cgilin,

See if any of this helps:

. XP Home: 5 connections; XP Pro: 10 connections.
From either XP OS, there is no limit other than the alphabet to the connections you can make. (And there are several ways around the alphabet for devices).

. from a workstation, you can connect to 5 folder shares on the "server", 3 network printers hosted on the "server" and it all counts as one connection, the way in which it counts; I have a workgroup with 80 clients that does not requre in the logon script connections to every share in the world. Most workstations need a connection to a printer server, and a file server. Leave both of these at the Win98SE level; or bight the bullet and do a full Win2k/ or Windows 2003 server. You are going to have to do this in the future anyway; do it now.

. There is Linux with SAMBA, and it does work. But this is decidedly non-trivial as a solution;

. WinME, and Win98SE, have no connection limits. As 24/7 servers I would rather a full Server OS. (Do Windows 2003 ang be done with it), but you can every three days or so reboot the machines (Windows 98SE or ME) and last a very long time. Win2k Professional Client has the same connection limits as does XP;

cgillin: I mean get a switch and network the computers to a server edition of the software. As bcastner alludes.
