Maximum file/path length under NW5.1

I understood that the maximum length of the combined pathname & filename is 255 characters. However, I've got a number of files/folders which are upto 273. NetWare doesn't seem too bothered, but I'm now supposed to move the whole lot to a Windows volume, which doesn't work.

Renaming folders is going to cause problems due to references within documents & spreadsheets.

So, can someone confirm what the limit is under NetWare?
Even better, does anyone have a link to a Novell document which states it categorically?

The limit is 255 - I have sufferred this problem for ages and the only way around it is really to rename files/folders. You may find that these files/folders are not getting backed up so you may want to check that out also.

You could always try shortening the paths, copying the data to the MS server, then renaming them back to their original name. It may be a pain in the rear, but probably the only way.

If you are copying data from one Netware 5.1 server to another Netware 5.1 server via a windows client pc is it still a windows client restriction which prevents the copying of long file names?
I've also noticed that we are unable to rename or delete long file names from a netware server volume using a windos client pc

The best way to delete long filenames is via the NetWare Portal. Rather tedious if you have a lot of them and sometimes it can cause the server to soft abend....

Just as a FYI, I've opened a ticket with Novell. They say it's not possible to create a file/path this long (!) and sent me PKTSCAN.nlm to trace what happens while I'm trying to copy the files.

I'll let u know what they say.
