Mapping Network drives, and having Web pages reside on a different box

Here is the quesion.
Cpu #1 is the Web Server with IIS holding all the web pages currently.
Cpu #2 holds alot of files we would like to display to the public via the internet.
Here is what I am having problems with, and what I have done so far.
I have mapped the drive E: from cpu2 to cpu1 and is also now drive E:. I then went into Internet Services, and created a virtual directory that points to Drive E: on the machine.
I have a script that has a link for a file on cpu2. I figured I could point to the virtual directory and everything would work fine...Not the case. Looks like this.

start->cpu2->cpu1->virtualDir->Internet(idealy)
Am I doing this the right way???
Can someone help please or suggest something...

I understand the gist of what you are doing, but misunderstand the method.

First the reason you are probably failing is permissions.

IIS has built in features for handling what you are trying to do. On your virtual website, or virtual directory, create as normal. Then go in and edit.

On the virtual directory tab, or the home directory tab, depending upon what you are doing.... check out the "a share located on another computer" option. When choosing this option you will be asked for a user account with permissions to the share, as well as NTFS permissions.

Then you should be all set.
