mapped drive net use h: \\server\folder1\folder2 ?

Hi all,

System setup:

Windows NT 4 Domain
Windows 98 clients.

I am trying to map home drives for these clients; previous administrator has already created user folders under G:\ alltheusersfolders. He has shared all of the drive G: and given permission to the individual folders.

Now in order to map the home drive I would need to either share all the individual user folders (for UNC drive mapping?) or create another folder called 'Users' and move all the individuals folder in there.

If i did it the first way- ( share each folder invidually) Only problem is that there are more than 200 user folders.

If I did it the second way i can only map for example \\servername\Users and not \\servername\Users\userfolder (?)

P.S. I believe only 2000/XP can have mapped drive with deep levels shares right?

Is there a way round this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Unfortunatly, I'm afraid you can only attach a mapped drive to a shared source. You cannot map something withing the share without doing something like a substitute (SUBST) AFTER the drive has been mapped.

\\<server>\<share> <= Will work
\\<server>\<share>\folder <= Will NOT work

The last admin obviously took the lazy route to mapping the folders to a common share and then simply using the NTFS rights on the individual folders.

Common practice would suggest that you make hidden shares for every user and then have the server attach to the home folder directly.

Example: User is Joe Shmoe.
- You create his home folder called \USERS\JoeShmoe.
- You create a share on the folder with the share name: JoeShmoe$
- You point the users home folder in his user profile to: \\<server>\JoeShmoe$

Hint: You can attribute all of your users in their profiles in one shot by editing all the users in a multi-edit and place the variable %USERNAME% in the user home folder profile. Example: \\<server>\%USERNAME%$

If I were to start from stratch, I would have done it exactly the way you described above (as I have done with most previous companies).

But as I mentioned in the original post, the folder structure has already been created and I was hoping there would be a way to 'enable sharing' on all the individual folders all at once. By default of course, if you select more than one folder and right click, the sharing option is not present. If there was a way to do this (third party software or otherwise), it would make things a lot easier

Just an update...

I decided to use a keystroke recorder to enable sharing on the individual folders. This method totally slipped my mind - does an excellent job though!!
