Hi all,

I am currently migrating from a netware6 domain to server 2003 active directory, and need to do this bit by bit.

I have used robocopy to keep all the data on the netware file servers in sync with a shiny new 2003 file a server (server3), whilst i workout the easiest way to point the users away from netware.

This data was previously moved from netware and stored on a DC (server2).

All the workstations are still in a workgroup (cannot add to domain as need to sort out profiles and mails files) and could map the drive from the DC server2 parsing their local details to access the share.
But since the share has being recreated on server3 they are prompted to supply credentials for server3.

The global group (of which they are all members)has been added to the share permissions and also nested into a local group on server3.

From a domain pc, this works fine but i cannot allow the users to login via the domain as yet.

I have scripted a net command suppling domain credentials via netware but its not ideal.

The real question is, why is server3 asking for credentials when a domain group is given rights, and both the local and 2003 and netware usernames and passwords are in sync.

I have checked and double checked DNS, and all is well.

I do not want to put AD on server3.

maybe i have been looking at this too long and become blind to the answer.

Never had this problem using NT4!

Thanks

Phil

Sorry, forgot to mention that all the workstations are 2000 pro with SP4.

You are using two differnt accounts in the senerio of logging on to a workstation that is not a member of the domain. Domain account = DomainName\UserName. Logging onto a stand alone workstation = ComputerName\UserName. Since your Global Group is using user accounts from the domain the member would be DomainName\UserName. The workstation sends ComputerName\UserName when trying to connnect to the share. This account is not a member of your global group so the server prompts for credentials...

...to resolve, use a local account on the server (that has rights to the resource) and create a script that Maps clients using the local account and password. Use this temporarily until you get the workstations moved to the Domain.

I thought of that, but the main data volume (as yet unmapped)has many different security accounts, so If i was to create local accounts on the file server to match, it would be a nightmare to handle.

Correct me if im wrong here (my forte is netware) but if i create a local group with full rights to the share on the file server, then add the domain global group, and as belt an braces add the users from the domain to the file server local group, shouldnt this parse the credentials from local to domain to member?

If i took this file server from the domain and placed it in a workgroup or added AD to server3, i suspect the problem would go away, so surely MS would not restrict access to domain member servers in this manner.

hey im just confused!!!
