Manual Gateway does not override DHCP Gateway

I have a wireless router that assigns DHCP IP addresses to wireless and LAN clients. The router sets the DHCP gateway IP address to its Lan address which cannot be changed.

On clients that have XP I can configure a manual gateway address to override the DHCP allocated gateway address.

However Vista machines still use the DHCP gateway address.
Changing the metric of the manual gateway address makes no difference.

Anybody have a solution to this problem?

Thanks

My first thought (may or may not be applicable):

Vista tries to use the TCP/IP v6 information first if availble. So, my guess is that you're manually adding an IPv4 gateway, but vista is receiving valid IPv6 gateway info via DHCP & trying to use that. Does your DHCP server provide both IPv4 & IPv6 info?

Thanks for the response.

TCP/IPv6 is un-checked.

The IPv4 route table shows both the DHCP default gateway and the manually entered default gateway but the DHCP gateway has a lower metric which is why it is used in preference to the manually entered one.

Won't use default gateway

I can't remember where I copied this (next) from or even if it is relevant?

"A default gateway is a local IP router that is used to forward packets to destinations beyond the local network. A Metric of Automatic specifies that the default route metric for the default gateway is automatically calculated based on the speed of the interface. The interface with the highest speed has the lowest default route metric".

In my stanek pocket book it says that if you have multiple gateway addresses just add these extra addresses in the advaced tcp/ip settings and vista will try use the lowest metric cost first then the next one. try that see if it helps you.
