Making an object transparent 1

A genius on Tek-Tips recently suggested rotating the graphic .01 degrees.
You cannot see the transparency of the original EPS logo because you are not looking at the original EPS logo. PageMaker uses a bitmap preview which is inherently rectagular.
You might also ensure that the image being saved from Ill8 has a transparent BG (this is found in the 'save as...' dialog)

Well, it also depends on the format of the imported logo. Is it in Illustrator format, EPS or something else such as a TIF from Photoshop (which hopefully you aren't using to create your logo) - but perhaps it was supplied to you in that format?

There are only 2 ways to have transparency with PM. One is to use an EPS (Illustrator or CorelDraw graphic, etc)with transparency. However, you must be printing to a PS prnter to relaize that transparency. Printing to your inkjet most likely will result in the solid white box.
As jimoblak says, what you are seeing is a tiff preview of the image,not the actual EPS image. Rotating that EPS 0.01° will allow the transprent mask to show the background.
The other method is to use a TIF with a mask. You will need Photoshop to create a mask that will exlude the transparent part of the image. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

All of these are great ideas!! But my machine doesn't like them. (Oh, how I long for a mac!!)
I tried rotating the image in IL8 .01. It didn't work. I tried to rotate it just a little teeny bit in PM, because it doesn't let me rotate incrementally, but that didn't work, either. I also tried to save as transparent BG in IL8, but it wouldn't give me that option. ARRGH!! Is this one of those things that they left out of the PC version, maybe as punishment?
It was provided to me as a TIFF.I actually have no idea how it was created, but I am fairly certain it wasn't in photoshop. I am the only one with any graphics programs, except for our GIS/GPS department.

I was thrown off by I have PM7 and AI8 and assumed this was vector art.
If you do not have Photoshop to do the clipping path as viol8ion states, you might try creating a shaped frame in PM that mimics the shape of the logo (if the logo lends itself to such a frame).

I used the preview function (for the first time) and found out html tags don't work but the square brackets things DO! Yay!

Hee hee, I have enjoyed indeed this thread. However, I am only slightly convinced!! (A Mac would be cooler, anyways!!) But I can be happy with my newly upgraded PC.
I don't have Photoshop. I have decided just to leave the darned thing on a white background!!!! And I learned a bit about html!! Thanks!!

I don't know if Corel's PhotoDraw or Print Shop Pro allows for clipping paths, or if you have any of those apps. If not, they are necessary if you intend to do any sort of extensive graphics work. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Did deana7732 ever find a solution? We're having the same exact problem right now. We tried that rotating-the- graphic-.01-degree thing, and were amazed when it seemed to work (on screen), but when we printed it to our PS printers, there was that ugly white background.

What kind of PS printers? HP? HP's are not true Adobe psotscript, but clones. You might try making sure you have latest print drivers installed (go to the print mfg website) or try using the generic Windows driver. Also make sure you have the latest PPDs from Adobe web site installed. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Viol8ion, we tried it on both an HP and on a ColorPass. Even if it doesn't show up properly on our printer, do you think it will appear transparent when printed by our commercial printing house?

If the EPS is transparent, then yes, it will come out transparent when printed professionally. One quick test would be to create a PDF of the document. The PDF will display/print properly. If the white box shows up on the PDF, then you have a problem with the way the EPS was designed. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Actually, my printer IS an HP. And to make things even more exciting, they just switched me to an even older printer!!
I am working on getting Photoshop and the Illustrator and Pagemaker upgrades. I guess for now my design work will be limited, and I do it within the scope of other things, but when we get another project, I have been promised new programs!!!!

viol8ion may not have emphasized printing enough when stated "The PDF will display/print properly".
You can beat the transparent/PostScript printing issue on incompatible printers by exporting PDFs and then printing from Acrobat. Acrobat is very forgiving on non-PostScript printers.
I was stuck with a dinosaur printer for several years. It was a nuisance to export PDFs to print instead of just doing a File>Print but the output from Acrobat was well worth it.
