making a 'custom' autonumber field?

Hi all,
Is it possible to change how the automumber field works. In cases where im using it for invoice numbering or id numbering i would like to add a prefix (inv001, inv002, inv 003,... instead of just 1, 2, 3 ...) is this possible?
