Makefile Tutorials

I am looking into a rather larger piece of code, which is compiled using a batch file, which in turn calls the nmake program and uses a rather complicated makefile.

I was wondering if anyone might point me to a good website (or book) with tutorials on creating a makefile (hopefully with a sample). Also I am interested in any other possible references (books, tutorials, whatever) for building embedded software in C.
