Open Outlook, press F1 for help (if that key works ;-))

type in your question : standard mail client

behold .... the answer

pretty smart answer JOKER!!!

usually i try to figure out help tasks myself but THANKS for reminding me!! I'll try to learn your "free tip" by heart. if i cannot keep it in mind i'll just post an imprudent thread on where i can find help when i can just get sarcasm. (fortunately i got some irony left for that cases)

besides the german version (i.e. it's help content) which i am working on does neither know that "standard mail client" term nor any synonyms.

constructive help would be highly appreciated! [thumbsup][2thumbsup][thumbsup2]

This is from the help file (actually, the Answer Wizard tab in Help):

Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Other.

Under General, select the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar check box.

Flapeyre, that is exactly what he would get if he used Help indeed.

firegambler,
If you ommit to mention you are using a German Outlook, don't blame US for it!
That still does not mean it's not in there.

In your Internet explorer go to TOOLS,INTERNET OPTIONS then
click on PROGRAMS try to change the application to Microsoft outlook
in the e-mail List Box.

good luck

Why you worry? Life is too short to worry.

i don't want to blame anybody; my fault indeed not to mention that i use a german version.

as far as i know the solution above is for outlookXP, i already got that answer once from an outlook xp user.
in outlook 2000 there is no such option on the "other-sheet".
i do not doubt that there is a solution in your helpfiles; as i said... mine is german and just 2000 and there was no such answer, sorry 'bout that.

@ encarta: thanks for your reply.
unfortunately i don't need IE to call outlook when i click an email-link but really make it my standard mail client since otherwise my palmtop won't commuicate with it and syncronize data.

Thank you all for your effort anyway.
I'd be happy if anybody found the solution and gave me a hint!

sure it is correct, but just for a limited part.
it makes outlook be the standard client to be launched by internet explorer but not the standard client in general so my palmtop unfortunately still does not "want" to synchronize data with outlook (just tried it).

But, is there no German around to read the help files?

sorry, i didn't quite get that. what do you mean?
whether there are no german help files installed?

How about this (This should work regardess of language):

Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop.

Select Properties (or whatever the German for "properties" is).

Select the Programs tab. There you can change the default client for e-mail to Outlook.

can't believe i'm the only one still working on office 2000  ;-)

You're not the only one working with Office 2000. No one else has responded because the correct answers have already been given.

i doubt you get the point. it is not making outlook respond when some mail link is clicked in IE. I am not looking for any "browser - mail client connection type solution".
all i want is to make my palmtop communicate with outlook and the synconizing software causes an alert that this can only be done when outlook is the standard mail client.
i tried the solutions above, all of them, and none of them worked so there must be some other "standard mail client type solution" although just saying i have the correct answers yet and it doesn't work even if it is the correct answer seems pretty comfortable for me too! [3eyes] :)

The answers are there, they just apply in English.
But honestly, I don't quite understand why it is so hard to go through the German Help and locate the answer.

If no-one speaks any German, then why is that Outlook in German?

A quick search on the net reveals that "standard mail client " translates to "Standardpostklient"

If you want to try other word combinations:

@ marcs41
this outlook is in german because it is my mother tongue (which i again forgot to mention - sorry).
that's why i am pretty sure that i checked all synonyms and translations of this damned term.

@ all
sorry for my sarcasm, it's just that i am a little fed up since i am just not able to figure out how to make that damned palmtop synchronize.

@ smah

thanks for your effort, i'll try that.

@ all
if that does not work either i guess i gonna reinstall office. i think i remember having been asked to make outlook the SMC when i opened it for the first time.
i just can't believe that program is taking me for a ride ;-)
