I am running Windows 2000 Small business Server on my server and this morning I noticed that my server is slow so I went to it physically to see if there was any strange behaviour. When I moved the mouse to activate the monitor to unlock the server with a password (I have a password protected screen saver afer 5 mins and monitor powers off after 20 mins), all I had was my mouse cursor and wallpaper. Nothing else. I was supposed to get the "click ctrl + alt + delete to unlock the computer" message, but I did not. The ctrl + alt + delete command would not function as well. So, I shut down the server by the main power button. After it booted back up, I am unable to access the administrator console. DNS is not working as well. None of the clients are able to access a network share or gain internet connectivity. Please Help!!!

LOL the old 3d Screensaver problem-- i thought it was common knowledge that the 3d ones mash the CPU MCSE NT&2K,CCNA/CCDA,CNA,ASE,NSP

I am experiencing this problem as well except that I do not have SP3 installed. They may be related.

I applied the latest Ineternet Explorer service packs as well.

Screen saver that I used in the beginnning was not 3d.
And, after re-installing SBS server, I did not enable any screen savers. I think it is more indept than this.

TechInNeed,

Are you still getting errors in your DNS server regarding the failure to load zones?

DNS is not running on this machine correct? Only the Small Business program. If you are still getting errors in DNS you may want to sort those out first.

If DNS cannot access AD then maybe that is causing the problems with the Business Admin retrieving necessary data, returning the error that it is on use.

MRFIRESTARTER, are gpo's applied to your member server/clients which are preventing the option to share folders? Also that the gpo may have been applied to your admin account?

Can you share from a client computer, and access it from a different client. IS this happening on all your member servers. Hewissa

Dear Hewissa, I m using Zone Alarm and also Norton Internet Security software. do uthink that this is the cause of it. Butttttttt, for you info, i have shutdown both the ZOne Alarm and the Norton Internet Security.

Anyway, you have mention to me that whether i have applied GPO, first of all the server which i m using is a Active Directory and i dont specify any GPO yet.

Thank you Hewissa for you tips

Dear Hewissa & TechInNeed

I am using Internet Explorer Version 6.0. is that the latest one or is there more? Thank u

Shutting down the service/program may not work.

Try this

1. Click 'Start' button from Task Bar and select 'Programs,' 'Administrative Tools,' 'Services.'
2. Select 'World Wide Web Publishing Service' from services list. From that you can notice that 'Status' of 'World Wide Web Publishing Service' is showing something like 'Starting'. It means the whole day it won't come up.
3. Double Click on that, you will see Properties Box of select service.
4. Click 'Startup Type' Combo box and select the type as 'Manual' and click 'OK' button.
5. And Re-start your machine. Then next time when you select 'World Wide Web Publishing Service' you can notice that nothing is showing as 'Status' of that 'World Wide Web Publishing Service'. Now if you want you can startup the service manually and once the service is trying to access LAN/WAN ZoneAlarm ask you to permit it. So if you permitted it'll work the way 'World Wide Web Publishing Service' earlier worked. This actually a work-around for this problem.

So for now, rule out GPO's and concentrate on ZA and NAV Hewissa

Dear Hewisa, for your info, i have disabled the Service bcos i m no longer using in this machine for time being. an one more thing, i m trying now to uninstall the ZOne ALarm and the Norton Internet Sec software.

Not bad, quite a fast reply, nyway, thank u for the fast respond, me really appreciate that.

Hewissa, I have already found a solution to my problem, What i do is i have unsinstalled the Zone Alarm Pro and the Notron Internet Security and then after i restart the server, i could manage to view the properties of the folder and the sharing as well. Anyway thanx a lot for your hint. i do really appreciate.
Adios.

Sorry for not replying or following the post recently. I have been extremely busy with my personal life and work life. I have not gotten a chance to read all your contributions until now. Hewissa, Yes I was using ZoneAlarm. Anyways, what I end up doing and hopefully for the last time is re-installing SBS Server, and I did this because I needed to install Exchange 2000 (This has to go live in a couple of weeks anyways). This time I installed all the critical service packs and updates including SP3 (note: I never had SP3 on the server). I had to do a little tweaking after this because it caused my clients to disconnect from the server. I however have everything back up and have not re-installed ZoneAlarm Pro. What I have right now is basically F-Secure AntiVirus. I will monitor and hopefully my problems will not re-surface. If they do, then there will be a number of things I will try from this post. I really appreciate all the knowledge that was shared here and thank you all for this.

I will keep y'all posted.
Take care.

oh btw, can someone comment on this please?

Hi TechInNeed,

Nice to hear back from you. Hope things with you over there are preety fine. I have something to ask you about. Since you have F-Secure, is this Software a freeware, and what exactly this software can do. One more thing, you have mentioned that you are going to install Exchange 2000 in your office. Well i am going to install in my office to setup a mail server. Could you help me on how to setup, Before that, i would like to test first in a separate LAN so that to ensure its working fine. Thanking in advace, have a nice day

hi i have been having the same problem described above regarding the inability to access the administrator toolbar (server busy... switch to or retry) i have read the above replies but cannot seem to sort the problem out. I believe it is a problem with my DNS or Netlogon settings as these are the only error messages occurring on my event log.

>Registration of the DNS record '_ldap._tcp.e2031369-7ecf->4610-98db->6de13263b5a0.domains._msdcs.admin.joconnor.co.uk. 600 IN >SRV 0 100 389 JOCSVR1.admin.joconnor.co.uk.' failed with >the following error:
>DNS operation refused.

>Registration of the DNS record '_ldap._tcp.Default-First->Site-Name._sites.admin.joconnor.co.uk. 600 IN SRV 0 100 >389 JOCSVR1.admin.joconnor.co.uk.' failed with the >following error:
