I'm completely new to some parts of exchange, so be gentle. This has been thrown at me, and I need some help. We're running out of disk space on our exchange 5.5 box. i have looked at mailbox sizes and i don't believe that it is being reported correctly. for instance, in my inbox at the moment, i have 10 items, i have only 75 contacts. i daily move mail items from my inbox to a .pst folder that is local to my machine. however, the exchange administrator program is reporting that i have more than 4800 items. for some other people, it is reporting more than 24,000. for those people, i've personally gone to their machines and moved mail items to local .pst files. in addition, it is reporting that some people are using more than 440 megs of space. any ideas what's going on? i've read as much as i can, but no luck. i just want to reclaim the space that should have been freed up when i emptied the boxes on the server. thanks in advance for your help!!

It sounds like the clean up needs to be made at the server not at your or your coworkers local machine.

that is my intention, but i'm not sure exactly where to begin. my assumption is that once the messages are moved from the server and placed in a local pst file, they are removed completely from the server.

Perhaps your deleted items retention settings are amiss. In Exchange Administrator, navigate your way to the Private Information Store for the server in question, and view it's properties. Check your Item Recovery settings on the General Tab. Marc Creviere
