I am running a mail server and a webserver on the same machine on a simple TCP/IP network. I want to find out how to direct customer's traffic to the mail server for their email programs to the correct port (8383) without them having to change their settings. I want a way to direct traffic to mail.myserver.com to the correct port so that the customer wouldn't have to put the port number at the end.

Thanks

What's the point? I'm assuming you're changing the port to add security by obscurity but if you setup some mechanism to redirect 25 to 8383 it defeats the purpose of changing the port number.

Anyone sending you email from any mail server in the world is going to use TCP port 25 (smtp). You can't change this!

Why exactly do you want to run your mail service on port 8383? What are you trying to achieve?

Chris.

I now have a clarification on the issue. My friend is running Imail and wants to differentiate how traffic is routed between web addresses. He has full control over the name server, and wishes to set things up so that myserver.com stays as the default port 80 on the IP address, but if a user types in mail.myserver.com as a web address, it directs traffic to port 8383. I told him that this might be done through dns settings, but i'm a networking amateur, and am out of my league.

You can't do this with DNS. This sounds more like a load balancer trick.

Some piece of software has to run on that machine to capture requests coming over port 80, determine the url in the request and forword them to the appropriate port.
