Mail going to root account

I set up 7.1 on a box w/ latest sendmail version. I created a test account and put it in the popusers group. When I go to send test messages, it goes into the root account. The message indicates: 550 Host unknown. Any ideas? Thanks.

The mail is going to "root" because the hostname defined in your e-mail address is unreachable from your Linux box for some reason. Before attempting to send e-mail to your new mail address try pinging the domain for that address. If the domain is for your local linux box then you need to add an entry for it in /etc/hosts. Give those a shot and let us know how it goes. d3funct

The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.

Thanks for the reply.

I am able to ping the box, and I can reach the box's default apache page. Also, the mail is getting to the box. The log shows sendmail makes 10-15 attempts to deliver the message and returns errors with 'host unknown' and 'host not found'
I tried several different test accounts (all in the popusers group.) In each case the message goes to the root mailbox as unresolved. I also sent a message from the test server itself and it also went into the root mailbox. Thanks.
