Mail Filter In Front of Mail Server

Hi, I have a box running Exchange 5.5 and would like to try enhancing the security of virus attacks (attachments) and spams by putting a linux box with some kind of mail filtering and scanning software in front of it. I would like to know what I should do to make this implementation successful.
ie: Mails are able to go through both ways and also filtered and scanned on the linux box.

Internet <==> Linux filter <==> MSX 5.5 <==> User

leaving aside the Linux configuration...all you need to do on the exchange server is change the IMS to forward all mails to the IP address of the Linux box (this is on the Connections tab) for outbound. For inbound, make sure your MX record points to the Linux box (or change your Firewall configs, whichever is appropriate for you), and make sure it forwards all SMTP mail to the exchange server.

What I would like to do is to have all incoming and outgoing mails to be going through the linux box first befoer going to the Exchange server. Is that possible?

Incoming yes. outgoing would need to go to the Exchange box, then the Linux box, then outside...
