I have an Exchange 5.5 server in a mixed mode Windows server envirornment. We are located on the West coast but have aquired several companies on the East coast. A 2mb piece of email takes about 45 seconds to open for the East coast users. They have deemed this unacceptable so I need to find a solution. I do not want to put an Exchange server on the East coast because there are other factors involved in the equation. These are things like a SAN, Enterprise Vault server, OWA and anti-spam server. Does anyone know of a way to reduce the delay for the east coast users. The only thing I can think of is a >pst file but I am not really into that idea. Any help would be appreiciated.

You don't state what client you are using but if it's Outlook, one short term possibility is to get all your East Coast users to work offline. Set their profiles to synchronise every 5 mins.

The downside is that they are not working in real-time but upside is that they are not pulling eveything down from the server over the WAN. Large emails will sychoronise in the background and every 5 mins new mail will appear in their inbox. Also, their sent mail will queue in their Outbox and be sent every 5 mins.

It's not ideal but a lot less frustrating for users as they are opening emails from their local drive (a lot quicker when opening large emails).

Another benefit is that they are less vunerable to PC failure (i.e. losing pst files). Everything remains in their mailbox on the server, the PC just retains a copy of it.

Try it with a couple of people to start with and see how they get on. I know it has worked for some of my users when they are working in remote offices for short periods of time.

Hope this helps
