Windows 2000 attempted to shutdown machine but it powered up again. First I blamed the OS but something was odd because the machine definitely powered down for a split second before powering up again. Also, the problem was not consistent, i.e. it occurred randomly.
By chance, I fixed the problem when I replaced a case cooling fan (the usual 12v 8cm box fan). Once the errant fan was replaced, the problem disappeared. I can only assume that 'power good' was being affected by some dynamo effect from the fan. Anyway, after 12 months I can bask in the luxury of a machine that does not restart.
I post this in case others have the same problem in order to suggest a simple and inexpensive possibility.
