Windows 2000 attempted to shutdown machine but it powered up again. First I blamed the OS but something was odd because the machine definitely powered down for a split second before powering up again. Also, the problem was not consistent, i.e. it occurred randomly.

By chance, I fixed the problem when I replaced a case cooling fan (the usual 12v 8cm box fan). Once the errant fan was replaced, the problem disappeared. I can only assume that 'power good' was being affected by some dynamo effect from the fan. Anyway, after 12 months I can bask in the luxury of a machine that does not restart.

I post this in case others have the same problem in order to suggest a simple and inexpensive possibility.

One time I had a machine that would not restart because my friend was unaware that USB 2.0 drivers cause problems with Windows ME...after nearly pulling out all my hair on trying to figure out why it wouldn't restart my friend told me he wanted it reformated so that's what I did and when he's like "how come usb 2.0 doesn't work" I said why and then he told me that he had previously installed it....just a couple things to remember folks!
