Mac Quark can't import text from PC Word

I have PC users that save their files as Word 6.0 and then place them on an Xserve for storage. Then Mac users pick up the word files and try to import them into Quark 4.11 on Macs. But they can't import, they get an error "Unknown error [1031]". I tried moving the word files to the local desktop to see if it was a problem going across the network, still did not work. The only way I have been able to get around it is to open the Word file in Word on the Mac and then do a SaveAs. The resaved file will then import into Quark just fine. The Users claim that this problem started when they started using the Xserve. Before that they were saving to a W2K Server. As a test I burned some files to a CD and tried to import them, to see if it was an Xserve thing, but the CD files didn't work either.
Opening and resaving all word documents from the PCs isn't an option because of the number of files.

Maybe check to see if MS Word is doing a speed save or something that would change the file format so the filter cant import it. Do all word files from all pc's get this error or is it just from one pc?
