I just picked up a lot of 2008 and 2616 the housing is in great shape all the 2616's work but most of the 2008's will not work. They are either dead or just the indicator's work but no hands free or program button will work. I get dial tone but it will not hands free. I am using them on the same extension that already has all these features working on another good 2008.

Is there any history of failures on the 2008 or any suggestions for correcting the problem.

Not all 2008 even have speaker phone (meaning they do not all have a mic). But they all have on-hook dialing. Is it that the speaker does not work, or the microphone... or the display?

older model 2008s needed a power supply for display or two way speaker.. as GH posted, the vast majority i've dealt were not full handsfree.. we are replacing 2616's with 3904's and 2008's with 2616's.. so maybe in 10 years we will be out of the 2008s

speaker, mic, display and even just the whole phone buttons and all.

is there a model number or series number?

If they have been re-painted the NT numbers may not be on the phone anymore, but you can connect the phone and IDU the TN that it is connected to. That will give you the NT code and the serial number. If the phone wont IDU then it's probably toast, as far as the speaker phone and display, I keep a power supply handy to test these with.
Once you IDU a phone (LD 20) you should be able to search the internet with the NT number and figure out which numbers are actual speaker phones and which ones aren't.

Your looking for whatever follows NT CODE...

REQ: idu 7 9
ARIES TN: 007 0 00 09
TN ID CODE: M2008

NT CODE: NTZK08AA <-----This is what your looking for
COLOR CODE: 35
RLS CODE: 04
SER NUM: 6755D3

Like I said though I don't have a list of which NT code is actually a speaker phone and which isn't. It seems like I always found the info I needed by doing a search on these forums though.

I would think that a set that has a tilt display is a display set. Also the sticker on teh bottom says "W/Display

Are you saying the display is also not working or just the HandsFree?

Well this is what I found out. Because most of the stickers are missing on the bottom,I opened up the sets and found that the mics are missing on some. So I guess these do not have the HF function built in.

However several have the tilt displays but when plugged in only the line buttons 0 thru 7 work not the displays. I get DT just fine. I can understand them making these units without a mic but why include a display if it does not work unless the display on these units are bad.

Is this possible?

Your going to need the external power supply to truley test the display.

If it were me, I would start buying phones from a more reputable source. The cost is insignificant, cause there are so many on the market.

you can tell if you have the old vs newer sets (that do not need power for display) by the way the connecters for line and curly cord are on sets.

old - I believe - clips on connecters face same direction
new - clips face oppisite direction

I might have that backwards but check some of your 2008 that are now working with handsfree.

That is backwards - the old sets had the handset and line jacks facing the opposite direction.

New sets were facing the same direction.

Yes, plugs are in different directions. What type of power supply will I need and how do I connect it to the phone?

P.S. Why on earth did these phones ever need a power supply?

On Metroline Direct it says that they were designed for the lower versions but recommended for 25 and higher. Any reason for this?
