I think I've got myself in a bit of a mess here !
A PC would not start XP. The error message suggested that
c:\windows\system32\config\system was missing or corupt.
I copied a file of the same name and same location on an identical machine to the non booting machine and XP does now boot BUT it displays a lsass.exe error briefly on screen and then reboots itself. The message is only on screen for a few seconds. It says something about an incorrect password value.
All suggestions gratefully received !
Thanks
Paul

The workaround you are attempting to do requires files from the exact machine experiencing the problem and not from its brothers or sisters. It really is a case of Physician heal thyself.

Try this procedure.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

Thanks. I added the HD from the non booter to another machine and copied the files as suggested in the article. System restored !
Thanks again.
