Does anyone know if LSASS can be removed from a windows 2000 server that is not running as a domain controller? I have a server that is running exchange 2000 and it is running extremely slow, and the LSASS.EXE process seems to be eating a large amount of memory and IO hits.

The Local Security Authority (LSA) is a protected subsystem that maintains the information about all aspects of local security on a system (collectively known as the local security policy) and provides various services for translation between names and identifiers.

The LSA security subsystem provides services to both the kernel mode and the user mode for validating access to objects, checking user privileges, and generating audit messages.

I don't think so.

Hi,

HAving the same problem with high lsass useage on DC's and slow Exchange 2000. Also running SMS which makes me suspicious. Did you find anything out?

To my knowledge, LSASS is a fundamental part of all Windows 2000 and XP systems, server or workstation and cannot be removed.

My next question, is not that LSASS takes up much memory and IO hits, what are the symptoms that you are trying to alleviate. Maybe the system would benefit from faster processor, more RAM, faster HD?

Is the load higher than what the server can process in a reasonable amount of time? Just things to think about.
