lsass.exe?

I have been experiencing something kind of new to me.
My zone alarm recently started asking if I wanted to allow
lsass.exe to have access to the internet.

What is lsass.exe and what does it do?

lsass.exe is the Local Security Authentication Server Service (or something like that). It validates user logins and stuff like that.

Not sure why it would want to connect to the internet though.
