Lower speed of CPU

Hey Guys I have a 1GHz processor and I need to slow it down to .6GHz. The vendor says I can do it if I have an XP operating sys but I am using a Linux OS. Is there any way I can adjust the speed by going into the bios? I need to lower the speed to conserve power as I am planning to run the pc on battery power.

You can lower the FSB speed in most modern BIOS's. Doing so will effectively underclock your CPU. It would help to know your laptop make/model and type of CPU.

I have heard of peoply buying the AMD Mobile 2500XP processors so they can overclock. I am guessing it works in reverse.

You could just get a Mini-ITX 600Mhz motherboard. Ever heard of the Via Eden? They use a C3 Processor. These processors are designed to use less watts.

The CPU is Advanced Digital Logic MSM855. Its used for embedded applications and not in Laptop. If the CPU speed is changed in the BIOS does it matter which oper sys is running? Shouldn't the CPU speed be same for all Oper sys after once it is set ?

Well different OS's have different methods of interacting with the BIOS. However, whatever is set in the BIOS should determine the speed of the CPU, regardless of which OS you're using.

That's what I too think. I haven't bought the processor yet but now I am kinda confident. It would be helpful if you can give me some tips to perform this in the BIOS.
