I have a Dell 800 MH Pent III with Win 98. I just added 256 SDRAM to make 384mb. I do a lot of multi-tasking. I can't understand why my system resources are hovering around 50% without using any program and as low as 23% when I multi-task. What is wrong?

I do not see a lot of issues with 384meg of ram, but I can tell you that Win98 can "see" up to 2 gig of RAM that Win98 can only CACHE 320MEG at one time. So anything larger than that can decrease system performance. As I have stated I have not seen it much of an issue with 384. I suggest ensuring you have loading up on boot up in the systray ONLY what is necessary for Day to day operations. Take out what is rarely used out of startup. James Collins

I use a freeware program called "Rambooster". It runs in the taskbar and will automatically free up a chosen amount of memory when it gets down to a chosen amount of free mem. I can often go a couple of weeks without rebooting, while multitasking and running large programs. (Programs that use 100s of mgs of my memory!)

Also I use a shareware program called "Chacheman". It runs in the taskbar and has lots of presets for managing your memory, swap file, etc. I really like it because its icon in the taskbar is a number - the amount of free memory.

These programs require almost no maintainance and together work great to keep your computer running smooth for a long time between reboots. - amgv84
